I often get asked this question about bagels. While no one wants to believe it, a bagel can have anywhere from 400 to 600 calories. That’s before you put anything on it. Most adults need less than that number of calories for their entire breakfast. So, if you’re having trouble losing weight, try switching your bagel to an English muffin which only has about 150 calories.

I noticed something very interesting this morning. I walked by a stand where free ice cream cones were being given out as well as coupons for that same free ice cream cone. Despite the fact that it was 9:45 in the morning, everyone was taking the ice cream cone rather than the coupon. Most people eat because food is available rather than eating because they are hungry. If you eat every time food is available, it is virtually impossible to maintain a healthy weight. Next time you reach for some food, ask yourself, am I really hungry? It’s a great way to prevent yourself from overeating.

Many people are hungry about 2 hours after breakfast. This results in mid-morning snacking which can add a lot of extra calories to your day. To cut back on this, try adding some protein to your breakfast. For example, have 2 hard-boiled egg whites with your cereal. You’ll feel full for longer and be able to last until lunch.

Most people know that protein is important if you want to build more muscle. But, many people don’t know that it’s just as important to get your calcium. Calcium is essential for building muscle. So, make sure to drink some milk, grab a yogurt or even some almonds to get your calcium today.

Want to lose weight and feel more satisfied throughout the day? Try switching your big meal to lunch instead of dinner. Make your dinner the lighter meal. You’ll end up snacking less throughout the afternoon which means you’ll end up eating less calories. Good news for fitting into your bathing suit.

Sounds crazy, right? Well, Coca Cola’s newest product is Coca Cola BlaK — a cross between coke and coffee. The good news is it only has 45 calories for 8 oz, much less than regular coke. But, it has twice the amount of caffeine. I haven’t tried it yet, but consumer reports says you’ll like it "If you like the idea of a hint of coffee with your Coke". Not sure what to make of this yet, but for the amount of calories it has, it’s a much better option than those gourmet frappuccinos.

If you’re going out for Cinco de Mayo, keep this in mind — most 8 oz margaritas have 500 calories. And, most margaritas are more than 8 oz. So, rather than a margarita have a light beer like Tecate Light, or even a regular beer like Dos XX is a better choice. If you do have a margarita, make sure it’s a small one.
