Delicious Light Yogurt

Friday, April 28th, 2006

People often complain to me that they don’t like light yogurts because they are too watery.  Yoplait has come out with Light Thick & Creamy Custard Style yogurt so say goodbye to those watery light yogurts. And, it only has 100 calories and no fat! Yogurt is a great, healthy snack providing lots of calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin A and Phosphorous.

Is sushi a good dinner option?

Monday, April 24th, 2006

Sushi can be a great option for
take-out. It’s healthy
(unless you are
pregnant)
and it’s relatively low in calories compared to many
other take-out choices. However, remember, portions sizes still matter. If you
have 10 rolls or lots of extra rice, the calories will add up. Also, the spicy
tuna roll is made with mayo. Mayo provides essential fatty acids which are very healthy, but it’s also
high in calories, so watch how much you are eating. And, tempura rolls and crunchy rolls are fried, so those are also high in calories and fat. Vegetable
rolls, tuna or salmon rolls or sashimi are great options if you are trying to lose or maintain your weight.

The Nutritionist’s Dilemma

Friday, April 21st, 2006

So, I was out to dinner last night at a true southern rib
restaurant. There was not one healthy thing on the menu - even the vegetables
were covered in butter (and you couldn’t get them steamed because they were
already prepared). So, here was my dilemma. As a nutritionist, I should be able
to figure out some way to eat healthy at this restaurant. But, most of my tips
that I usually give for eating out didn’t work here. I ended up really just
watching my portion sizes, especially with the particularly fatty, unhealthy
foods. So, if you’re ever in this situation, remember that it shouldn’t be an
excuse to just eat everything. Watching your portion sizes can really help make
sure that your meal doesn’t end up being two days worth of calories and fat.

Portion Controlled Crackers and Cookies

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

Do you always eat too many cookies or crackers when you buy a big bag? Check out Nabisco’s 100 calorie packs. The flavors include oreo, chips ahoy, cheese nips, wheat thins and they’ve recently added ritz to the line up as well. Although these aren’t at the top of the list for health foods, they’re a great little indulgence already portion controlled for you. So, you don’t have to worry about eating that whole bag of oreos.

Talk about a Whopper

Monday, April 17th, 2006

As if a double whopper weren’t
enough, Burger King now has a triple whopper. Have that with mayo and you’re at
1130 calories, 74 grams of fat and 27 grams of saturated fat. Add some cheese
and you’re at 1230 calories, 82 grams of fat and 32 grams of saturated fat.
That’s more than a day’s worth of fat and saturated fat.  And, for most people that’s 1/2 to 3/4 of your calories for the entire day. Now that’s a whopper!
